For those really short on time the 1-day by train is the shortest tour available to Machu Picchu while still allowing nearly a full day to visit at the ruins. There are two options depending on which rail company and time schedule you choose.

Normally it is not possible to visit Huayna Picchu on the 1-day tour as climbing times are in the morning and conflict with the guided Machu Picchu tour but we have made a package (w/ Peru Rail) to allow for an ascent if there are Huayna Picchu entrances available.

Full Day By Train Option W/ Inca Rail Trains

You will leave Cusco at 4.00 or 5.00 am and go by bus to the Ollantaytambo train station to catch your train at 6.40am or 7.20am, arriving in Aguas Calientes at 8.20am or 9.00am. A guide will be waiting to bring you to your bus up to Machu Picchu. The bus trip up to the ruins lasts about 20 minutes and upon arrival you will meet your group for a 2.5 hour guided tour. Following the tour you will have the rest of the day to explore the site at your own pace or do an alternative trek, such as visiting the Sun Gate. The park closes at 17:30, giving you more than 6 hours to take in the beauty of the ruins so plan your departure accordingly. It takes 20 minutes by bus, about 2 hrs on foot to Aguas Calientes. Return trains departs at 2.30pm, 4.12pm and 7.00pm and arrives in Ollantaytambo at 4.10pm, 6.00pm and 8.40pm where bus transport will be waiting to bring you back to Cusco. Drive by bus Ollantaytambo – Cusco takes about approx. 1.40hr to 2hrs.
